productive train knitting

This morning I spent a very productive train ride knitting. Here’s where I was at the start of the commute:

mitts

Mitts For Me, in Malabrigo’s Merino Worsted, color: Pearl Ten (it is purpler than the picture)

And here’s where I was at the end:

mitts unraveled

Turns out I can’t measure my own hand. Even tho the size I thought I was (8.5″) matched up with “Mens Medium” in the pattern, I carried on knitting, figuring that size will out. I remeasured my hand this morning (7.5″). Yup, I’m a standard Ladies Medium. And while I hate ripping out knitting, and I especially hate frogging, my proposed fixes (decreasing about 6 stitches in the next row, or lightly felting it) seemed silly now that I knew I was in error, and not the pattern. Plus, it’s not like I got very far. *sigh*

happy knitiversary!

Today is not my actual one-year knitiversary. But it’s close enough. Yes, one year and one week ago I was in Seattle with my friend Carey and asked her how to knit, in exchange for teaching her how to make marble magnets. It took me a month or two to get the hang of it (it took Carey less than one evening to get the hang of marble magnetting), but I can proudly claim that I have still not finished a scarf! What I have finished instead are a multitude of hats. It’s the lazy, obviously. I haven’t touched the CDR since I took it off the needles (note to self: if one is a lazy crafter, then one should not remove project from needles before project is complete, especially if said project is large), my ribbed hat has languished since I took up the hallowig (deadline knitting not conducive to working on other projects. Also, everything i was working on was ribbed so I got very sick of it. Also also it hasn’t been hat weather), and those knit robots have been sitting in the knitting bag since kingdom come (obviously the robots are planning to take over the world and I am doing my part to resist them). Regardless of the lack of many fo’s, I am still proud of myself. I did not forsee doing a sweater, let along a cabled sweater, or a pair of lace socks, or a knitted wig! Go me! Cake and presents welcome.

try it on for size

Here are the pics of me in the sweater, at approx 36″ (the cables make it a slightly dif width, tho I didn’t take a tape measure out)

It doesn’t quite fit over the ladies. Hopefully another inch will do it.

sizing up the matter

I have been cranking out the rounds on my cable down raglan. I am up to the part where I need to pick a size. I measured my store bought sweaters – they seem to be about 36″ or 37″. I’m worried that the 38″ will be too big, and the 34″ will be too small. However, my gauge is off at 5st to the inch instead of 5.25 (fell victim to the “swatch on straight needles while the project is on circs” problem). So, doing the math, right now my sweater measures 36″ at the bust. I’m going to try it on tonight to see if it fits. If it does, that means I have to do more calculations to figure out the waist cabling. As it stands now, I can do 11 waist cables, but there would be no k2 ribbing between the cables. If the 36″ is too small, I can go up to almost 37″ by adding the k2 border around the diamond cable. Thoughts?

round and round we go

One of the stumbling blocks to working on the cable down raglan has been using a cable needle. This is my first cable project and I dutifully bought a cable needle to cable with. I didn’t know if you had to have a particular size (turns out it’s easier to use the same size as your knitting needle. My cable needle was smaller. Oops.). It’s been a drag. I just can’t deal with 3 needles going on at once. It’s very slow going, even when I started using a dpn of the same size as the knitting needle.

That has hopefully changed. Today I taught myself how to cable without a cable needle, thanks to grumperina. I did 5 rounds today, that must be a record! I finished the first skein of yarn, too, finally!

mark needs some tiny hats

for his nose, so he can stop giving me his blasted cold. Damn men. The good news is that all I want to do is cuddle up to some wool, so I brought my ribbed hat in to work today and I plan to sit out in the sunshine (it promises to be a fabulous hot SF autumn day) at lunch and knit.
